Go Pink: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Walgreens
Over the course of a lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer affecting nearly all American families. Thankfully, with the proactive efforts of so many research and awareness organizations, women are beginning to get the treatment they need, and much sooner at that.
During Breast Cancer Awareness, take some time to learn the risk factors for developing breast cancer for yourself. Two main factors include:
Age: The majority of breast cancer cases are found in women over 50 years of age.
Family history: Family history of breast, uterine, ovarian and colon cancers can increase the risk for developing breast cancer.
Early detection and screening is the best way to lower the risk of progressing into more aggressive stages of breast cancer. Most experts recommend following these screening recommendations from the American Cancer Society:
Self-Breast Exam: Monthly exams, beginning at age 20 during the week of the menstrual period.
Clinical Breast Exam: Performed by a health care provider every 3 years between the ages of 20 and 39 and every year beginning at age 40.
Mammograms: Every 1-2 years beginning at age 40, depending on risk factors.
Certain high risk women may have a breast MRI along with their yearly mammogram. Ask your doctor if you need one.
While each of these early detection and screening methods are recommended by the American Cancer Society, remember to stay informed with balanced discussions with your doctor and additional reading and research to determine if mammography is the right choice for you.
